Understanding the Verification

The Initiative for Lifelong Equine Guardianship (ILEG)  provides information on the policies and procedures of organizations, Some are  designed to help protect each horse for life, some are not. If a person or  an organization does not remain the guardian of each horse for life their horse can easily be at risk for slaughter.
This is why tens of thousands of horses are shipped to Canada and Mexico annually for slaughter.

ILEG reviews the following areas of organizations for their practices and provides links to the organization's page so you can confirm any new update. Items reviewed are:

  • Adoption Contract

-Prohibits Transfer (Unless the organization approves and a
            new contract is expected)

  • Adoption Application
-Screens through the Veterinarian, Farrier, Neighbors
(Trainers and boarding facility is applicable)

  • Veterinary Follow-up Form
-Requires lifetime reports from the veterinarian at minimally annually.
